Do you have a teenage driver?
Here are a few terrifying facts.
Teens behind the wheel are inexperienced – and the consequences can be deadly.
Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death for teenagers.
Nearly 13 people die each day in crashes involving drivers ages 15 to 20.
More than 4,700 people die in crashes involving teenage drivers each year.
Teens aren’t the only ones dying. Occupants of other vehicles, pedestrians and teens’ passengers accounted for nearly half of the deaths in teen driver crashes
Teens face considerable risks as new drivers.
For teens, just one passenger increases their crash risk by 48%. That risk grows as more passengers are added – a teen is 307% more likely to crash with three or more passengers.
Most fatal teen nighttime crashes happen before midnight. Teen crash risk is high in the evening hours.
Novice drivers’ risk begins to drop with experience. The first 6 to 12 months and 1,000 miles have the highest crash risk.
Cell phone use while driving is deadly. Data show texting and handheld cell phone use is highest among ages 16 to 24.
So parents, here's what you can do to help ensure the safety of your teenage driver:
Make sure your teen practices, a lot.
Limit the number of passengers in your teen's vehicle.
Restrict nighttime driving.
Insist your teen wear his/her seat belt when in any vehicle.
Restrict your teenager's cell phone use while they are behind the wheel.
Set clear rules and stick to them.
Research shows regulating these factors will keep your teen alive and help your teen become a safe driver.
